October’s Book of the Month – The Last Library by Freya Sampson

The Last Library: 'I'm totally in love' Clare Pooley    In  The Last Librarian June is a shy, reclusive library assistant at Chalcot Library and since her mum, the much loved Librarian, passed away eight years ago her life has come to a standstill. She spends her evenings and weekends eating takeaway meals for one and rereading her favourite books in the home she shared with her mum and now shares with her cat, Alan Bennett.

When the library is threatened with closure June has to find the courage to  fight her shyness, let go of the past and  join forces with a group of eccentric locals who call themselves FOCAL – Friends of Chalcot Library to save the library and very heart of the local community.

Despite its light touch, the story  highlights the vital role libraries play in our communities as well as the importance of friendship and kindness.  I  found it to be funny, poignant, uplifting and ultimately a love letter to libraries and librarians everywhere.

My perfect library (as opposed to the college library I work in).

I was terrified of going through the menopause and whilst I glided through relatively unscathed, I didn't entirely escape its attempts to knock me down I firmly believe there is a positive side the menopause and to being an older woman in the 21st century. In my fifties I trained as a fitness instructor, which I did as a side hustle to my regular job of a college librarian. I also took up belly dancing and danced on stage in a city theatre and created my own fitness classes with hula hoops. Last year at the age of 61 I ditched the library job and now buy and sell vintage jewellery, run fitness classes and work part time from home in a customer services role. It ain't over till its over.
