In  The Last Librarian June is a shy, reclusive library assistant at Chalcot Library and since her mum, the much loved Librarian, passed away eight years ago her life has come to a standstill. She spends her evenings and weekends eating takeaway meals for one and rereading her favourite books in the home she shared with her mum and now shares with her cat, Alan Bennett.

When the library is threatened with closure June has to find the courage to  fight her shyness, let go of the past and  join forces with a group of eccentric locals who call themselves FOCAL – Friends of Chalcot Library to save the library and very heart of the local community.

Despite its light touch, the story  highlights the vital role libraries play in our communities as well as the importance of friendship and kindness.  I  found it to be funny, poignant, uplifting and ultimately a love letter to libraries and librarians everywhere.
